With the first Citizen Police Academies held in the UK in the 1970s, it is time for police forces in the UK to renew their commitment to their communities by resurrecting the Citizen Police Academy concept.
The Citizen Police Academy is a program that has proven its ability to promote better understanding between law enforcement and the public
Introducing Citizen Police Academies
Bringing Citizen Police Academies Home
The UK has a long and proud tradition of being at the forefront of policing, however the Citizen Police Academy (CPA) concept - of late driven by law enforcement agencies in North America - has lost momentum in the UK. We are on a mission to facilitate the delivery of new Citizen Police Academies in the UK, working in partnership with one or more localities.
We recognise that in the present climate activities such as CPAs can appear either costly or otherwise a luxury activity. However, with clear benefits to both the public and policing, we believe that overlooking CPAs is a mistake we can ill afford.
We are actively seeking expressions of interest from police forces that wish to be involved in this exciting development and to help restore interest in a concept first pioneered by British police forces in the 1970s.
[CPAs are] a great opportunity for local people from different communities, backgrounds and with different life experiences, to gain a better insight into policing.
It's a really good exchange ... the police are able to explain their roles ... I think it really works for everybody
